A vibrant learning community

-

IN keeping with its mission to develop an attractive, supportive and inspiring environment for its students, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) plays an integral part in creating opportunities that lie at the intersection between lifelong memories and service to empower them to make a difference in community.

NUMed designs its events around its values of academic excellence, multiculturalism, internationalism and service to society, said NUMed provost and chief executive officer Prof Chris Baldwin.

“Our students aren’t here exclusively for classroom learning – they’re also learning how to be part of a community. We want to provide them with an enriching platform that offers a myriad opportunities to contribute,” he said.

This year, NUMed students participated in numerous events, including volunteering at Kechara Soup Kitchen and the university’s annual Stage 4 Health Camp called Karnival Jom Sihat.

Prof Baldwin said the events gave students a chance to gain invaluable experiences.

“NUMed requires not just great students but a vibrant community to support their development and prepare them for academic, personal and professional success,” he said.

The university’s Stage 4 Health Camp Karnival Jom Sihat, which aimed to promote health awareness, took place at Kampung Dato Sulaiman Menteri last month. The event served the dual purpose of giving back to the community as well as training the next generation of medical professionals.

“We get to learn how to contribute back to society by raising health awareness as well as enhancing our communication and collaboration skills. This helps us become more well-rounded doctors,” said organising committee vice-president Syafika Amanda.

Students who participated in the volunteer activity with Kechara Soup Kitchen found the experience to be fulfilling as it allowed them to create positive change in their community and gain a better understanding of values and empathy.

Besides the events run by NUMed, students are encouraged to participate in activities beyond the university such as the Medics Intervarsity Games organised by the Asian Medical Students’ Association Malaysia.

The annual national sports event is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and foster a sense of camaraderie among future doctors.

As the top medical education provider in Malaysia, NUMed is committed to providing its students a holistic learning experience that extends beyond academics and allows them to contribute to society at large, ultimately shaping leaders in the medical field – young people determined to make a positive impact locally and globally.

NUMed is globally renowned for being one of the best British universities for medicine, offering world-class medical education to students from over 120 countries.

Currently, it is placed fifth in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2019 and in the top 125 (Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health category) by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2018, among others. It also received a 95% Overall Student Satisfaction Score according to the National Student Survey 2017 (subjects allied to medical category).
