Surplus food social supermarket
GRAB bargains at Grub Cycle, Malaysia’s own surplus food social supermarket dedicated to reducing food waste. Unsold food that is typically removed from shelves because it is close to expiring, has damaged packaging or a unique appearance, is now here.
They have a pantry where surplus food is transformed into a different form – like a chilli chutney or pineapple jam – to extend their lifespan.
Grub Cycle focuses on grocery products and perishable foods but currently their main focus is surplus food from restaurants and cafes. Using the Grub Cycle app, restaurants can list unsold food at a reduced price before they close for business. Customers have a variety of surplus food they can choose from at bargain prices (usually a 40% to 70% discounted rate).
Grub Cycle helps companies reduce their financial expenditure while also helping to reduce food waste damage to the environment. The app also shows statistics on how many kilos and ringgit are saved from every purchase made.
To date, Grub Cycle has saved more than 7,000kg of surplus food from being thrown away, and helped customers save more than RM50,000. Their strategy has raised more than RM1mil through grants and investment as well as winning two awards at the
Alliance Bank
SME Innovation
Challenge 2016.
Grub Cycle is hopeful that the increase in organisations like theirs focusing on reducing food waste will push the government to expedite the introduction of a food waste act in Malaysia.
