Road to a bright engineering career
ENGINEERING is one of the three most wanted sectors, the most likely to offer jobs upon graduation and the most in-demand field in Malaysia. This was based on a recent study by Khazanah Research Institute on “schoolto-work transition survey” .
Therefore, engineering programmes are much sought after and pursuing engineering studies at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is an ideal platform to gain knowledge and build the future as UTM produces quality graduates.
This is proven as UTM was recently ranked 53rd in the world in engineering and technology, ranked 47th of the best universities in Asia and 18th for the university being set up under 50 years.
UTM has various partnerships with leading industries in Malaysia. Kuok Foundation, Yayasan Telekom Malaysia and Yayasan Tenaga Nasional Berhad are among the companies that provide scholarships for students.
Besides that, companies such as Petronas Research Sdn Bhd, Bakti Suci Solutions Sdn Bhd dan Azman Hashim Foundation have been involved in collaborative research, granting research money and cooperating in the field of study.
This enables the programmes offered at UTM to meet the needs of the industry and enhances graduate marketability.
UTM has also created an Endowment Fund to help underprivileged students (B40) pursue their studies at this university. At UTM’s 61st Convocation Ceremony, a total of 32 endowment-sponsored students have successfully graduated in engineering programmes.
The Endowment Fund comes from contributions of the industry and various parties. UTM welcomes more parties to contribute in order to help students build the future as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.
In 2019, UTM is targeting to have 92% of graduates employed within six months of graduation. This shows the university’s commitment to reducing the unemployment rate in Malaysia.
UTM is a leading university in terms of expertise and knowledge in technology engineering. Efforts are always taken from time to time to ensure that its programmes remain relevant.
Pursuing engineering studies at UTM is an ideal platform to gain knowledge and build the future as UTM produces quality graduates.
Hence, the Centre for Engineering Education (CEE) was established in UTM. It serves to drive the Engineering Education programmes and initiatives and has received international acclaim.
CEE aims to provide guidance to educators in both local and international universities with the mission of educating engineers to better their skills and knowledge based on research on current issues and the latest techniques in engineering.
This helps to produce skilled engineering graduates who will meet market demands and employers’ expectations.
Its director Professor Dr Khairiyah Mohd Yusof was recently awarded the Duncan Fraser Global Award for Excellence in Education Engineering by the International Federation of Engineering Society in Albuquerque, the United States, for her outstanding contribution in the field of international engineering education.
Prof Khairiyah is not only well known in Malaysia, but also in the world. Among her high-impact success projects was modernising higher education in Afghanistan since 2015 using the engineering education approach, which emphasised student-centered learning.
CEE also provides a platform for everyone involved in the engineering education field to contribute and collaborate in order to increase knowledge and skills in the engineering education field.
