Charting a course for success
IT was a memorable moment when Team Super Trio, which comprised three HELP business students – Terrell Thu, Jasmyn Lee and Owen Puah – emerged as one of the top three teams in the CPA Australia and KPMG Case Competition 2018.
One of the stringent entry requirements for the nationallevel competition was a minimum CGPA score of 3.20. It was only open to third-year final semester students in an undergraduate university programme.
The biggest attraction of the competition is that the winners in the top three teams are offered the chance to work at KPMG Malaysia upon completion of their bachelor degree.
Thu, Lee and Puah now have an opportunity to work at one of the top international accounting firms in the world. All three were also recipients of HELP University scholarships.
They felt the competition was all about teamwork and attributed their win to the lecturers who mentored them.
Thanks to their success, Lee’s ambition of working in a top international accounting firm has come true.
While Puah’s ambition is to be part of his family’s business upon gaining experience working at KPMG, Thu intends to eventually work in an advisory or consultancy business.
Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FBEA) senior lecturers and mentors for the team, Liew Huey Min and Steven Toh, believe that students gain from being exposed to competitions, not only in terms of confidence but also in their ability to apply textbook knowledge to the real-life scenarios.
HELP University’s FBEA is one of the largest business schools in the region and its Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Honours) degree is recognised by many international professional accounting bodies.
Due to its high standard of academic excellence, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales have granted a maximum number of exemptions to HELP University’s Bachelor of Business (Accounting) graduates to pursue professional qualifications.
Furthermore, HELP University’s Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Honours) programme is accredited by CPA Australia (Certified Practising Accountant Australia).
HELP University students can also transfer credits to many top universities in Australia, the UK and New Zealand, including University of Queensland, University of Melbourne, Australian National University, University of New South Wales, University of Western Australia, University of Liverpool, Cardiff University University of Essex and many others.
Other degrees offered by FBEA include the Bachelor of Business in Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Marketing and Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Business Psychology, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Tourism Management and Diploma in Business.
FBEA students Chan Kao Sem, Mooi Weng Hou and Chia Cheok Sun emerged as regional champions in the CIMB Asean Stock Challenge in 2014, beating of the best universities in the region to become the winners with a cash prize of US$12,000 (RM50,000).
Another feather in the cap for FBEA was last year’s convocation, where four out of the nine President Award winners were from FBEA and all of them graduated with firstclass honours.
The President’s Award is presented to graduands with an outstanding academic performance at the convocation annually and FBEA stole the limelight with the most number of recipients.
