Project Blue Book

- Kenneth Chaw

HISTORY Channel’s most successful scripted drama Vikings will unfortunately come to an end after its upcoming sixth season.

It’s high time the channel started looking for its next big thing. The 10-episode drama series Project Blue Book centres on an engaging subject – UFOs.

It opens with the US Air Force hiring Josef Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen), a real-life American astronomer and ufologist, to conduct covert investigations on UFOs around the 1950s.

Josef is paired with World War II Air Force pilot Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey) who thinks all this is hogwash.

The two investigate a different UFO case (based on famous reallife UFO accounts) in each episode – ranging from a pilot who claims he engaged in a shootout with an alien aircraft, to a woman and her kids who witnessed a flying saucer crash near their farm and an alien appearing from the wreckage.

On top of the cases, the show includes an overarching mystery – a man in a black hat keeps appearing in the episodes and seems to be trying to tell Josef something.

It keeps the series from feeling like it’s just a bunch of reenactments and keeps viewers glued.

I also love the fact that all the cases are based on true stories. After watching each episode, viewers can find out more on the case for themselves and draw their own conclusions.

Project Blue Book airs every Wednesday at 10pm on History (Astro Ch 555).
