THE National Industry 4.0 Policy has been launched and in years to come, the adoption of Industry 4.0 (IR 4.0)-related technologies by various industries is expected to grow. Biotechnology and bioinformatics are two important areas of IR 4.0.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) in AIMST University offers the BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology, BSc (Hons) in Bioinformatics, MSc Biotechnology (by research) and Doctor of Philosophy in Biotechnology (by research).

The multi-disciplinary BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology equips students with the knowledge and practical skills in related fields that are useful for a working landscape that has evolved with IR 4.0.

Over 750 students have graduated since 2005, with many placed in prominent companies.

For example, barely two months after graduating last November, a BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology graduate was offered a scholarship to pursue a doctoral degree at the National University of Singapore.

This global acceptance of graduates reflects a well-balanced curriculum. This is evidenced by the recognition of the BSc (Hons) Biotechnology programme with grade A by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency in 2011.

The faculty has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with international universities such as Leicester University (UK), Deakin University (Australia), University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and Technical University of Denmark to forge academic and research collaborations. In addition, the programme incorporates a 12-week industrial training stint either locally or abroad.

The newly introduced BSc (Hons) in Bioinformatics was developed with IR 4.0 in mind. It brings together knowledge of bioinformatics and tremendous potential of biotechnological tools for wealth and knowledge creation.

Bioinformatics graduates are expected to play important roles in connecting the biological world to the digital revolution in big data analytics, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things.

The March intake for BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology and BSc (Hons) in Bioinformatics is now open for registration. AIMST University offers a full tuition fee waiver for qualified SPM students for Foundation in Science leading to BSc (Hons) Biotechnology and BSc (Hons) Bioinformatics.
