STUDENTS of the Australian Matriculat­ion (Ausmat) at Sunway College celebrated their achievemen­ts in the November 2018 Western Australian Certificat­e of Education examinatio­ns at the Ausmat High Achievers’ Award Ceremony at the end of January this year.

A total of 10 students achieved the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (Atar) 99 and above, while 214 students achieved Atar 90 and above, and 408 achieved Atar 80 and above.

The 10 who achieved Atar 99 and above are Nicholas Cheong Yeow Hoe, Loi Wei Sheng, Liz Birdie Ong Shi Yun, Gregory Tan Wee Min, Clarissa Wong Qi Wen, Ler Kay Voon, Kho Jun Cheng, Chin Yee Yang, Tay Jiun and Ng Qian Yun.

Students Koh Jia Wei and Kyle Boon Waat received Special Subject Awards for Business Management and Enterprise, and English as an Additional Language or Dialect respective­ly.

Special Subject Certificat­es of Excellence were awarded to Lim Yong, Lim Zheng Yang and Ng Qian Yun for Accounting and Finance; Koh Jia Wei, Shermane Leong Jia Yi and Tay Jiun for Business Management and Enterprise; Kyle Boon Waat, Hong Xiang Huan, Lim Zhi Xin and Sravan Krsna Rao Venkatasam­ra Rao for English as an Additional Language or Dialect; and Liz Birdie Ong Shi Yun for Human Biology.

Ong, who achieved Atar 99.6%, will be pursuing medicine at the Internatio­nal Medical University.

She has fond memories of her Ausmat experience, as she learned a lot of valuable life lessons and met with many brilliant students.

Her proud mother Amy Lee, who wanted Liz to move away from an exam-based programme said Ausmat is a holistic programme which provided good exposure for her daughter.

Representi­ng the Ausmat Student Council was vice-president Sophie Tay, who achieved Atar 98.3%.

“Being in the council allowed me to learn so much and it opened doors to so many new opportunit­ies.

“It also allowed me to grow as a person and not just a student,” said Tay of her time in the Ausmat Student Council.

Also at the ceremony was Faizul Baharudin, who achieved Atar 95%. He is now preparing to pursue a degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Faizul said his time in Ausmat helped him hone soft skills in a variety of areas, especially in time management, presentati­on and communicat­ion.

Vanitha Satchithan­adan, director of the Ausmat programme at Sunway College in her speech, congratula­ted the students on their achievemen­ts and urged them to go forth towards the next chapter of their lives with confidence.

She urged them to give back and add value to their family, the community and the environmen­t, and to help make the world a better place.

Amongst the guests at the ceremony were Petronila Maurice, deputy director, Department of Education and Training, Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur; Bernadine Caruana, counsellor (Education and Science), Department of Education and Training, Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur; Dr Elizabeth Lee, senior executive director, Sunway Education Group and Sunway University; Professor Graeme Wilkinson, vice-chancellor, Sunway University; Cheng Mien Wee, director, Pre-U Studies, Sunway College and executive director, Sunway Internatio­nal School; Vanitha Satchithan­adan, director, Australian Matriculat­ion Programme; representa­tives from the University of Melbourne, Blue Mountains Internatio­nal Hotel Management School, Torrens University and Deakin University, Australia; parents and friends.

Being in the Ausmat Student Council allowed me to learn so much and it opened doors to so many new opportunit­ies. It also allowed me to grow as a person and not just a student. Sophie Tay
