New teaching fellows welcomed
NEWCASTLE University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) welcomed a fresh batch of graduates to its Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Teaching Fellow Programme, which is designed to provide a platform for them to take part in teaching the university’s current MBBS undergraduate students.
Throughout the programme, the fellows will also have the opportunity to develop their own professional educational knowledge and teaching skills as they continue honing their medical knowledge using a variety of methods.
As fresh graduates, the fellows are better able to understand and relate to what the undergraduate students are going through. This enables them to offer invaluable insights even as they share their accumulated experience and knowledge with the students.
“Through the MBBS Teaching Fellow Programme, we are better able to help undergraduate students who are struggling to understand certain medical concepts by being given the opportunity to share our knowledge, while subsequently growing our passion to teach,” says Paul Khoo, a current MBBS Teaching Fellow.
Leo See Wei, another MBBS Teaching Fellow, concurs.
“I am grateful I have the opportunity to be involved in the development, delivery and monitoring of the courses throughout the whole MBBS programme, from Year 1 to Year 5. Not only that, I get to carry out educational projects as well, such as the development of new innovative teaching materials and an audit,” she says.
“I have so much to learn in medicine and am determined to be more hardworking compared with when I was a student. Now I have to make sure I thoroughly understand the topic before teaching it.
“In addition, I get to revise all my medical concepts at the same time. My stint as a teaching fellow has allowed her to tremendously improve her self-confidence.”
