Global career choices aplenty

-

IT is one of Malaysia’s best kept secrets – a career in real estate.

Real estate, or property, includes housing, offices, shopping malls, warehouses and factories. The more prosperous a city is, the higher the value of its real estate.

Indeed, real estate is a major component of economic growth and is the world’s largest asset class. Globally, it is worth trillions of dollars.

Sounds like something you would like to venture into? Great, because a whole host of diverse career opportunities across the world can be found in the real estate sector.

This includes real estate investment, asset management, property management, valuation, consulting, city planning and construction management.

Real estate professionals can choose to work either in the public sector, or the private sector for real estate consultancies – with prominent ones such as JLL, Savills, CBRE and Knight Frank - or even large construction firms.

Real estate professionals are also in high demand from financial firms such as banks for their expertise in managing REITs (real estate investment trust) and asset portfolios.

Indeed, students who study real estate tend to have an advantage over students who study general business and management because they acquire more specialised knowledge and skills. Simply put, this makes them more readily employable in the realestate industry.

To get your head start, look no further than the BSc Real Estate offered by the Henley Business School, which is ranked no.1 in the UK for property management.

Located at the University of Reading’s stunning new Malaysia campus at Educity in Iskandar Puteri in Johor, the Henley Business School offers students the best of both worlds – the opportunity to study for a prestigious UK business degree in Malaysia, following the UK curriculum, at significantly lower costs compared with going to the UK.

Henley’s BSc Real Estate is one of the few, established programmes in the country. It has become the preferred option for budding real-estate professionals such as final year student Leon Choong.

“I would like to be a registered valuer and practice in Malaysia. The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Real Estate is accredited by both the Board of the Valuers, Appraisers, Estate Agents and Property Managers and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

“This means I will be able to practice in Malaysia and most of the Commonwealth countries once I pass the Test of Professional Competence from those organisations,” chimes the 21-year-old.

Choong also credits the Henley Business School for helping him land an internship with global real estate consultancy, Knight Frank in 2017.

All students benefit from Henley Business School’s close industry ties which pave the way for expert seminars, company visits and internship opportunities.

In fact, it is not unusual for students to have the luxury of picking from several job offers when they graduate, given the high demand for their specialised knowledge and skills.

If you are a SPM holder, you can enrol in the University’s International Foundation Programme (IFP) and complete the Foundation in Business, which then allows you to progress directly to Henley’s BSc Real Estate programme.

There are intakes for the IFP in April and September. Alternatively, you can apply for direct entry with a foundation in business, A-levels or other suitable qualifications. The next direct intakes are in September and January.
