IF you’re a hair person, like I am, any sort of hair appliances and tools will make you excited. For someone who spends half her life in a hair salon and travels with several hair products in hand, the Dyson airwrap styler is heaven-sent.
the words “life changing” may sound like an exaggeration, but really, if you have hair prone to frizziness or masses of it, doing your own hair is time-consuming and a struggle. My moods are dictated by my hair, great hair means it’s a good day. Bad hair, just don’t talk to me.
So I was really excited to try out the airwrap styler as it means I can cut down my salon visits (every two days) and if I’m in a rush, I can do my own hair and not freak out after.
a little background on the airwrap styler: It comes in a sleek and streamlined design with several attachments and all in a beautiful leather box to keep it in.
It uses jets of air that help create natural waves, voluminous curls and smooth blow-dry finishes.
after studying current styling technologies, the Dyson engineers noted what they felt could be improved such as tangled hair, temperature damage and airflow.
What they came up with is known as the Coanda effect. this happens by harnessing Dyson’s digital motor and the Coanda effect occurs when a highspeed jet of air flows across a surface, and due to differences in pressure, the air flow attaches itself to the surface. the team of aerodynamics used this principle to create a way of styling hair using only air combined with heat. the result: fabulous hair. What happens is that for whatever style you choose – curl, wave or smooth – it creates a natural look, a sleek finish and helps prevent extreme heat damage. no one wants fried hair, right?
the complete set comes with a preset dryer, a soft smoothing brush (adds body and volume to limp, flat hair while creating a smooth, blow dry finish) 40mm airwrap barrel (creates loose curls or waves for thicker, coarser hair) 30mm airwrap barrel (create voluminous curls or waves for most hair types), Firm smoothing brush (for a straighter style with less frizz) and the Round volumizing brush (creates volume and shape).
the Firm smoothing brush is the one I mainly use as it’s for thicker hair, the Round volumizing brush is more for thinner and finer hair. I’m not really a curls person, but watching the way my hair wraps itself magically around the airwrap barrel makes me want to do curls.
Before you use any of the attachments, you need to use the pre-set dryer: your hair should be damp, not wet. then use whichever attachment you prefer.
there’s also a quick-release switch and cool tips which allow you to change attachments after styling.
Prior to using it, I was given a short training session on how to use the airwrap styler, but honestly, it’s not complicated, just a matter of switching attachments and getting comfortable with it.
So does it work? Yes. I would say this is the simplest and fastest way to achieve salon style hair in the comfort of your own home. I do use hair serums as one thing to note is that you still need to put in your usual anti-frizz serums or whatever you normally use before a blow dry so it lasts longer. If your hair is fine and manageable, you probably don’t need it.
What I loved the most is the speed. It took less than 10 minutes to do my hair (it’s shoulder length) using the Firm smoothing brush and that’s already a plus in my book. this helps when I’m in a rush. and a brush that smooths and dries my hair at the same time? Perfect.
