Students win big in design competition

-

THE One Academy’s creative talents recently took part in the Asia Student Package Design Competition (ASPaC) 2018 and won big.

The competition serves as an international cultural exchange project which aims to provide a platform for young talented designers across Asia from countries such as South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam to showcase their work.

The winners are given the opportunity to exhibit their design and entries in participating countries as well as attend company visits and workshops.

The opportunity gave them the chance to explore creative culture in other parts and regions of Asia. The theme for this year was ‘Innovation’, and the group delivered their best.

The participants from The One Academy bagged a total of seven awards with their stunning handiwork.

Chow Zhen Lu, Yap Jia Ern, Foo Wai Kee, Kylie Chia Ying Yee, Jeslyn Ooi, Chew Siew Qi and Lim Shiau Ting, who won one honourable award and six merit awards, proved that creativity and talent know no borders.

When asked about their journey during the competition, all of them agreed that it was truly challenging and fruitful.

Chia recounted that she felt truly content and confident upon hearing she had won a merit award for her design whereas Chew felt encouraged.

However, their path to success was not all smooth-sailing as each of them faced their own set of challenges.

Among them was the mechanism of the packaging itself. Each participant had a unique approach to the competition’s theme of “Innovation” and with big ideas comes the challenge of executing it perfectly.

To produce a worthy design, the students had to look past conventional packaging available in the market and come up with something new thus leading to them exploring new mechanisms. Although it proved challenging, they persevered.

Foo, who received a merit award, thanked The One Academy for providing classes and the knowledge to execute her winning design.

She also noted that the feedback and comments she received from lecturers on her handiwork were helpful as she was able to improve herself and her work based on it.

Similarly, Yap also thanked the college for not only bearing the costs of delivering the submission but also the lecturers for providing constructive criticism which helped her improve.

Chow, who received the honourable award for her creation, was invited to Japan for the exhibition.

She had an incredible experience as she not only got to meet other makers and creators but also got to learn a load of new things.

“The whole trip was fun and exciting. During the exhibition, I got to learn about other cultures,” she said.

Their advice for future participants is to never give up and always keep practising.

“Hard work becomes good work” said Foo.

Chia’s advice to students is to just go for it.

“Don’t doubt yourself and try, because if you don’t try you will never know,” she concluded.
