Gateway to medical studies

EMBARKING on a medical career is not a decision to be taken lightly. To make it easier for students, renowned medical school RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC) is providing an alternative pathway.

Be it the student who has made up his mind or the student who has yet to commit to a career in medicine, RUMC’s Foundation in Science (FIS) programme is suitable.

The unique pre-university pathway gives students an early introduction to the medical and clinical field in a hospital setting.

“If you know medicine is what you want to pursue, attaining a solid RUMC foundation will give you a head start in basic sciences with laboratory skills,” said RUMC Foundation Studies head Datin Dr Annie Foo.

RUMC Foundation in Science student Muqri Hilman Ainul Hasnizam shares, “I find RUMC one of the best platforms to start college, especially if you are planning to go overseas.

“After just six months, I can imagine myself being a proud RUMC graduate and encouraging others to take the leap of faith to pursue medicine especially at RUMC where they nurture you all the way to become a great student and doctor.”

The unique medical degree programme offers students a guaranteed place at RCSI or UCD in Dublin, Ireland for the first two and a half years (upon fulfilling entry requirements).

With only one intake per year, full-time students can begin their pre-undergraduate path to medicine in May. Tuition fees are RM30,000 and RM35,000 for Malaysian and international students respectively.

Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)/O-Levels students who score 3As and 2Bs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or Additional Mathematics and one other subject qualify to enrol in the FIS programme. Unified Examinations Certificate (UEC) students who score B4 in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics or Advanced Mathematics are also eligible.

Students with higher academic achievements can apply for up to 50% scholarships.

Upon completion of the FIS programme, students who score a CGPA of 3.5 to 4.0 may progress directly to the five-year medical degree programme at RCSI or UCD and RUMC, while students with a CGPA score of 3.0 to 3.49 may proceed to a one-year pre-medical course at RUMC.
