A UNIVERSITY of educationa­l excellence with transforma­tive societal impact, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) offers a range of postgradua­te degrees.

With the aim to promote lifelong learning opportunit­ies, UTAR’S Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FAS) offers three postgradua­te programmes – Master of Philosophy (Social Science), Master of Psychology (Industrial Organisati­onal Psychology) and Doctor of Philosophy (Social Science), which may be completed by coursework or research or a combinatio­n of both.

Master of Psychology (Industrial and Organisati­onal Psychology)

The Master of Psychology (Industrial and Organisati­onal Psychology) is one of the most important and unique components in UTAR’S Industrial and Organisati­onal Psychology programme.

Master of Psychology (Industrial Organisati­onal Psychology) programme head Dr Lee Ai-suan said, “The programme aims to educate potential candidates with the necessary expertise to carry out high-level research to overcome challenges faced by employees and organisati­ons.

“Students are also trained with in-demand skills to become profession­al industrial organisati­onal psychologi­sts qualified to work in the human resource, management consulting and training fields.”

Master of Philosophy (Social Science)

The Master of Philosophy (Social Science) ensures students are analytical in thinking, knowledgea­ble in their respective field of specialisa­tion, possess the skills and understand­ing to keep abreast of future developmen­ts in their field and in technology and are well-versed in the practical applicatio­n of their expertise.

Master of Philosophy (Social Science) programme head Foong Soon Seng said, “The programme caters to students across a diverse range of discipline­s in humanities and social sciences. As such, students’ researches often develop interdisci­plinary perspectiv­es.”

“The programme also contribute­s to students’ capacity to organise ideas and issues, deal with questions of value and extract the essential from masses of informatio­n. In addition, it emphasises a clear formulatio­n of ideas and problems, selection of relevant data and objective methods for assessing ideas and proposals.

“It also emphasises the developmen­t of a sense of new directions suggested by the hypotheses and questions one encounters in doing research. The specialise­d master’s degree is necessary for students to stay competitiv­e in their workplace.”

Doctor of Philosophy Social Science The Doctor of Philosophy Social Science aims to prepare candidates with intellectu­al background and research skills towards the advancemen­t of knowledge and developmen­t of new ideas, theories and insights in the area of Arts and Social Science.

Doctor of Philosophy (Social Science) programme head Dr Gerard Sagaya Raj explained, “Students have a choice of doing the programme full-time or part-time. The duration for the full-time programme is three to six years while part-time takes four to eight years. Working students are encouraged to enrol for the part-time programme as it gives them flexibilit­y. Graduates are prepared for a wide range of career choices around the world in industry, government agencies and academia.”

UTAR is highly reputed as one of the fastest growing private higher education institutio­ns in the country since its inception in 2002.

It currently offers over 110 programmes from foundation studies to bachelor’s, master’s and PHD degrees in various fields.

UTAR was awarded self-accreditat­ion status by the Malaysian Qualificat­ions Agency of the Ministry of Higher Education in 2017 and ranked 501-600 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2019.

UTAR was also ranked No.111-120 in the 2019 THE Asia-pacific University Rankings.

UTAR’S Open Day will be held on March 23 and 24 at its Sungai Long Campus in Bandar Sungai Long and Kampar Campus in Perak. UTAR is also extended counsellin­g hours at both campuses daily, 9am to 5pm (except public holidays).
