Happy World Water Day

-

KIDS, do you know what day is it today? It’s World Water Day!

The United Nations has made this a day to appreciate freshwater.

This year’s theme is “Leaving No One Behind”, meaning everyone should have access to safe water.

If you are in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, you could participate in the World Water Day run this Sunday at Penampang Sports Complex. Don’t forget to ask Mummy and Daddy to join in the fun.

Water can be obtained from three sources – groundwater (water from underground), snowpack (water from melted ice) and spring water (water that flows from an aquifer to

Earth’s surface).

About 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. Worldwide, one out of every five deaths under the age of five is due to a water-related disease.

Children, do your part to keep our rivers clean. Ensure you do not throw waste and trash in river.

In conjunction with World Water Day, we asked our young readers to submit their letters and drawings on water. Judging from the responses, we can safely say there are many young water conservationists out there!

Tharun Kandasamy, eight, feels water is very important for all living things to live their life. “We must learn to save water and not keep the tap running as some countries do not have adequate water.”

“Turn off the tap after washing hands to save water,” writes Arianna Tan Vern Sze, six.

Tamaraa Parameswaran Ramasamy, eight, shares: “Turn off the shower when your are applying soap. Take a quick shower and use a small tub of water instead of running water while washing face.”

“Water is very important, so please do not waste water,” writes Tan Li Ren, nine.

Cynthia Lau, nine, encourages children to save water. “Earth needs water, so be kind to Mother Earth.” – Compiled by Mohamad
