Medical studies in Russia

-

A MEDIC Ed graduate shares his experience, “I am a graduate of Moscow State Medical University, previously known as Moscow Medical Academy, and currently working in a suburban hospital in Victoria, Australia.

“Many young students wonder if it is possible for Russian graduates to work elsewhere besides Malaysia and Russia. Many doubt the credibility of the Russian universities.

“As an alumnus of Moscow State Medical University, I can assure future medical students that studying in Russian universities is just the same as anywhere else. In fact, students may have an added advantage of knowing an additional language – Russian. However, day-to-day classes are conducted in English. The most important aspect is that our degree is widely recognised – not just by our local Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), but also WHO and many countries around the world.

“With low and attractive tuition fees, no doubt Russia is a popular destination for medical education. Most local medical universities’ tuition fees are very costly. Even with loans, parents will still feel the burden, not to mention the burden of loan repayment students will face upon graduating.

“I understand many Malaysians do not know about the Russian Federation very well, but individuals who have been to Russia know it is one of the safest countries in Europe with a very low incidence of crime.

“Foreigners who embrace their culture are welcomed with open arms. I used to stay with the locals and I find them nice and carefree people. The six years of education in Moscow were truly an amazing and enjoyable experience for me.

“Upon graduating, I applied for a post as a house officer via MMC. After completing my housemanship service in Sabah, I sat for the Australian Medical Council examination and passed both papers on the first attempt.

“However, a few colleagues I worked with during my housemanship were not able to complete the examination even after several attempts – this totally defies the logic that Russian graduates are incapable of learning well and cannot be better doctors compared to the local graduates.

“For the subsidised tuition fees in Russian medical universities, it is worth embarking on this journey. To all students having doubts about the country and universities there, fret not.

“There are plenty of Russian doctors working in Australia and New Zealand who are living proof that the quality of education in Russia is as equally good as other first-world countries. As for me, I am a proud medical graduate of Moscow State Medical University.”
