Endless possibilities in medical bioscience

-

A university education equips individuals with a set of tools which they can apply and use for their careers in the future. these set of tools tend to be very similar which suggests that even if you are trained in a particular field, it does not mean someone from another field cannot catch up.

For this reason, Monash university Malaysia school of science Professor of Biomedical sciences, Professor Chow sek Chuen, encourages his students to think outside the box and not limit themselves to a career in biomedical sciences.

“they can do other things if they want to. it is how they use the tools they have and a matter of how far they want to go,” he said.

Many assume biomedical scientists only work in labs, running tests. However, that is only one little aspect of it. there are other areas they can get into, for example toxicology where they understand how poison works and how it affects our physiology, health, and immune system.

students can also join pharmaceutical companies to deliver the latest drugs and treatments to medical doctors, or they can become product specialists who sell equipment to clinics and hospitals. these jobs require students to be able to explain how the latest drugs and treatments work, as well as provide training to clinicians on the operation of equipment.

students have the option to work with regulatory bodies to implement regulations and educate the industry and public on that governance, or write for newspapers, magazines and pharmaceutical companies which are in need of people with a scientific background.

some students may decide to return to universities to conduct research as that is what they enjoy doing, however, with a first degree, students can go to schools to teach science and with a master’s degree, teach in colleges.

if students are interested to work closely with medical doctors, they can still do so by working in the background doing research and understanding what causes this and that.

Biomedical scientists mainly play a supporting role of helping medical doctors to develop techniques to diagnose a disease or develop drugs to treat a disease.
