Keeping Fido safe and comfy on a road trip

-

IF you are planning to take your four-legged friend with you on holiday, you will need to put in some effort to ensure they stay healthy and comfortable while on the road, especially in hot weather.

Firstly, you will need to ensure your dog or cat stays adequately hydrated.

Especially on longer trips, your pet should have access to fresh water in a leakproof bowl at all times, says animal welfare organisation Peta.

Especially on very hot days, a slightly open window while driving can help keep your pet cool.

To prevent the animal from being injured in a sudden movement while you are driving, they should be seated in a box designed for pet transport, or secured with a seat belt.

Be sure to check their position regularly – whether belted or in a carry box – to make sure they are not exposed to direct sunlight, which could result in sunburn.

During hot weather, the interior of a car can reach very high temperatures quickly and an animal should never be left inside the car on its own.

Like humans, animals can suffer from travel sickness. If your pet is affected, you should consult a vet before taking them on vacation. The symptoms can be reduced with medication.

Dog owners should plan a travel route that allows regular breaks for the dog to get out of the car and stretch their legs. Be careful when stopping on a roadside, and make sure the dog is on a leash first. –dpa
