Made-in: Indonesia was a design showcase which highlighted the country’s rich culture and craft heritage.
SIMPLY put, the Made-in: Indonesia showcase of contemporary design paid homage to nature. Filled with creations inspired by leaves to landscapes, the furniture and homeware utilised natural resources ranging from bamboo to rattan.
However, beyond that, the debut event was a feast for the eyes and fodder for the creative soul.
Organised by IndustryPlus, the Made-in series features one country in each edition and highlights the works of established designers, artists and manufacturers who represent their country’s culture and craft heritage.
Made-in: Indonesia was held within Nook Asia 2019 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore from March 9-12. Nook Asia is a furnishing trade exhibition held in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) and the ASEAN Furniture Show (AFS).
The Indonesian edition reflected the country’s energetic design community, where its designers have easy access to rich, natural resources and traditional craft techniques.
The nine exhibitors involved were Bika Living, Byo Living, Cassia Studio, Kandura Studio, Studio Hiji, Santai Jogja, Uma, Yamakawa Rattan and Zaqi x Weijenberg.
From Cassia Studio, there was the Daun Chair, whose backrest is inspired by leaves. Featuring slim metal legs for a sleek look, its curved shape is made out of natural and synthetic rattan to provide support and comfort. The studio also designed the Split collection, consisting of colourful trays, containers, and table mirror with collar-like details.
Woven-rattan chairs and stools by Santai Jogja in bamboo, teak or mahogany struck a good balance between heritage and modernity.
Meanwhile, Uma had some pretty eye-catching pieces which references the solar system such as the Satellites egg stand, Halo table lamp and the Hexa tray.
Best known for their ceramic tableware designs is Kandura Studio, which explores visual themes inspired by natural landscapes both in Indonesia to as far as Chile. Its products are characterised by a mixture of textured colour clays, uneven glazing techniques and randomly applied motifs.
