Caring for your joints
IF you suffer from joint pain in areas of the body such as the knees, ankles and shoulders, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, joint pain is such a widespread problem that it is a common complaint among the older generation.
Joints are connections between two bones. Often, the pain is caused by wear and tear of the cartilage, the tough bone-like material that cushions joints, leading to inflammation, pain and stiffness. The disease is medically known as osteoarthritis. Risk factors vary from obesity to hereditary conditions, with age being one of the most common risk factors.
Risk factors are often out of our control, which is why it’s important to learn how to care for our joints before osteoarthritis develops and the pain sets in.
Glucosamine is a natural compound found in the cartilage. It is often prescribed as a health supplement for the treatment of osteoarthritis. In its supplemental form of glucosamine sulphate, studies have demonstrated that 1,500mg a day helps reduce knee pain. Glucosamine encourages the regrowth of cartilage and helps prevent further breakdown of these substances.
Chondroitin sulphate is also commonly found in the cartilages of the body. It has anti-inflammatory benefits which helps reduce pain and slows down the wear and tear of cartilage. Not lacking in clinical studies, 1,200mg of chondroitin sulphate is commonly recommended together with 1,500mg glucosamine sulphate, which is clinically proven to help in pain reduction and recovery of knee function. The benefits of taking them together are much better compared with taking them separately.
The combination of 1,500mg glucosamine and 1,200mg chondroitin helps reduce joint pain and swelling, rebuild cartilage, slows down progression of osteoarthritis and helps improve quality of life for those with osteoarthritis.
