The mighty Red beer

- – Michael Cheang

IF you’re a fan of Liverpool Football Club, then the special-edition Carlsberg Red Barley is the beer for you.

Inspired by legendary Liverpool FC manager Bill Shankly, who in 1962 was the one who decided to dress his players in the now iconic red kits, the Carlsberg Red Barley comes in a red tube with the Liverpool crest on it, in a red bottle with a red cap and label. Even the beer itself is a crimson red colour as well.

Carlsberg Red Barley is a limited-edition 4.5% ABV pilsner that gets its distinctive colour from a barley variety specially curated and bred by the scientists at the Carlsberg Research Laboratory.

A few selected members of the media got to try the beer at Carlsberg Malaysia recently, and being a beer AND Liverpool fan, I naturally could not resist.

Like the green-labeled flagship Carlsberg, the Red Barley is a pilsner beer, and it retains that crisp and refreshing nature of that style. However, the main difference between the two (other than the colour, of course), was that the Red Barley has a slightly fuller body, and tastes maltier and slightly sweeter on the palate, and also doesn’t have the unique hoppy bite that the regular Carlsberg has.

Sadly, the beer is not for sale in Malaysia, though Carlsberg Malaysia brought in 2,500 bottles that consumers could win during the Probably The Best Viewing Parties involving Liverpool FC’S Premier League matches last month. But who knows, there might be more on the way, so why not follow the Carlsberg Malaysia Facebook page, just in case?
