DEAL WITH TEETH SENSITIVITY AT THE ROOT

-

WHEN you have sensitive teeth, the level of resulting discomfort ranges from mild to severe, depending on the condition. More worryingly, this condition can also be an early warning sign of more serious dental problems.

Sensitive teeth is caused by the layer under the enamel (dentin) or the layer covering the root (cementum) becoming exposed due to receding gums. The exposed areas respond to stimuli, such as heat and cold and sometimes overly sweet and spicy foods, triggering pain.

If you are experiencing teeth sensitivity, do get it checked out as it may be a precursor of gum disease. Dentists have recognised a close link between teeth sensitivity and gum problems.

Globally, over 50% of those suffering teeth sensitivity also report signs of gum problems. A study conducted in 2010 indicated that nine out of 10 Malaysian adults suffer from gum problems (Malaysia National Oral Health Survey for Adults (NOHSA) 2010) – a truly alarming number indeed.

“Teeth sensitivity and gum problems are prevalent in the country; yet, such issues go under-detected and under-treated. The growing number of sufferers we see are also not proactively managing either symptoms. These two issues are interrelated and would be required to be simultaneously addressed,” says University Malaya Dental Faculty Department Of Restorative Dentistry lecturer Dr Cheah Chia Wei.

Reports show that 44% of people suffering sensitive teeth opt to change their tooth-brushing habits to avoid the affected areas. This can lead to a sticky film of bacteria called plaque, which if not removed by twice-daily brushing can build up and cause swelling, bad breath and discomfort when brushing or flossing. Dentists agree both these symptoms need attention and their patients would benefit from taking control as soon as possible.

To deal with this problem at the root, make the wisest choice of oral care products, such as toothpaste formulated specially to target sensitive teeth and its related conditions.

If you are experiencing teeth sensitivity, here is a solution for you – Sensodyne, the No.1 tooth sensitivity toothpaste provider in the country (Retail Value Sales data 12 months ending December 2017), has introduced Sensodyne Sensitivity & Gum.
