Timeline of elephant deaths

ELEPHANT deaths due to human developmen­t are not actually a NEW phenomenon, with such incidents recorded in Malaysia as far back as the 1890s.

> On Sept 17, 1894: A bull elephant was killed after reportedly charging a train in Teluk Intan, Perak, supposedly in revenge for the earlier death of a calf. The site in Sungai Kerawai is now a memorial to the elephant, and its skull and tusks have been preserved in the Perak Museum in Taiping.

The following are just some of the elephant deaths recorded recently:

> October, 2019: A six-year-old female elephant was found dead following a hit and run accident at Batu 13, Jalan Kota Tinggimers­ing, Johor.

> September, 2019: A bull elephant with over 70 gunshot wounds was found in a river, tied to a tree in Tawau, Sabah.

> July, 2019: An elephant was killed after it was hit by a lorry on Jalan Kuala Berangarin­g, Hulu Terengganu.

> June 2019: Three elephants found dead due to poisoning near Kluang, Johor. In the same month, an elephant found injured by a vehicle in Tawau, Sabah, had to be put down.

> March 2019: Two elephants found dead in Tawau and Kinabatang­an, Sabah, cause of death unknown.

> May 2018: Six pygmy elephants found dead in Sukau, Telupid and Lahad Datu on the east coast of Sabah. It is believed they were poisoned.

> March 2018: An elephant was found shot in Hutan Piah, Gerik, Perak, with its trunk and tusks removed. Four men were arrested.

> January, 2018: A two-tonne elephant was found dead, believed to have been electrocut­ed by a live wire from roadworks, in Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak.
