Haute showcase

WATCHES are big business these days. Fine designs, which include the most marvellous of complications or breathtakingly intricate decorations, can indeed ignite an excitement like no other in timepiece enthusiasts.

But can the general layperson appreciate them? Swiss Watch Gallery thinks so, and as such, is once again offering Malaysians a glimpse into the world of haute horology with its Art Of Time exhibition.

Taking place at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur starting tomorrow until Nov 10, it will showcase some of 2019’s horological marvels. These include the novelties that were unveiled at international trade shows.

According to Ashvin Valiram, executive director of Valiram Group, not everyone is lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend the exclusive Baselworld or Salon International Haute Horlogerie events in Switzerland.

When Valiram-owned Swiss Watch Gallery first started the Art Of Time exhibition back in 2011, it was to inculcate a love for horological instruments and craftsmanship among Malaysians. The aim has not changed.

“Over the last eight years, we have been doing just that,” Ashvin notes. “The exhibition has moved from strength to strength, and I believe that this year will be, by far, our best.”

Participating brands of the 2019 edition include Arnold & Son, Bell & Ross, Girardperregaux, Graham, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaquet Droz, Oris, Parmigiani, Tag Heuer, Tudor, Ulysse Nardin and Zenith.

Art Of Time will be paying tribute to the art of watchmaking, its exquisite designs and revolutionary mechanisms – as well as breakthrough technology from the 12 brands that have stood the test of time.

Specially constructed booths afford visitors a sense of luxury. Inspired by the chalets of Switzerland, the concept this year uses wood panelling and soft downlight to create warmth.

The displays will surely illicit awe. From having beautifully enamelled dials to sporting a floating movement or flying tourbillon, fine watches are very much an art form

– and Malaysians are quickly catching on.

“The customers who walk into our boutiques, now know what they’re asking for. They know the brands they want, or what kind of complications that the designs offer,” states Ashvin.
