Coming home

Australia-based Nur Fatimah returns to Malaysia to compete in local singing contest.

THOUGH she has moved to Canberra, Australia, singer Nur Fatimah (pic) is looking forward to the prospect of reviving her music career in Malaysia.

Nur Fatimah, 37, left for Down Under to further her studies in 2009.

“Then I met someone and we got married so I decided to stay on,” she shares with Starlifest­yle.

Nur Fatimah’s music career came into the spotlight when she placed first in RTM’S singing competitio­n Golden Teen Search

1999. She went on to release two albums in 2001 and 2004 and is best known for her hit Selembut Sutera.

After settling down in Canberra for close to 10 years now, where she works as a part-time educator, Nur Fatimah talks about why she decided to restart her career here.

“I’ve gotten a lot of fan requests asking me to come back and join Gegar Vaganza since three years ago. I read up on it and thought it was a good platform to revive my career.”

Gegar Vaganza, now in its sixth season, is a reality competi-featuring tion seasoned singers who have stepped away from the spotlight.

Past contestant­s include Siti Nordiana and Siti Sarah who experience­d a career resurgence after competing on the show. “There is a sense of warmth,” she says about coming home. “Seeing so many familiar faces and being able to speak Malay more is a nice feeling.” Not only will she be in the country for the duration of the competitio­n, Nur Fatimah plans on spendmore ing time here to establish her career post-gegar Vaganza. “I’m fine with flying back and forth (between Malaysia and Australia). My husband is fine with it too.

“I’ve been singing since I was eight. I was part of the kids programme Kelab Kanak Kanak Angkasapur­i. That’s how I earned my pocket money. So I’m happy to do it.”
