Royal with a deep love for animals
WHEN a video clip of several Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) dog catchers brutally handling a stray dog went viral in October, it caught the attention of Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.
Dismayed by how the hapless animal was treated, she immediately issued a statement through the Selangor Royal Office condemning the act.
“I was very upset when I was shown the video clip of several MPSJ staff trying to catch a stray dog in a brutal way,’’ said Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin in the statement.
She urged the local authorities to practise compassion when handling street animals and hoped that the standard operating procedures for catching such animals were adhered to.
An animal lover, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin also rescues cats. According to people close to her, she has almost 20 rescued cats to date placed in several locations.
Reflective of her compassion for street animals, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin has established a mini cat sanctuary aptly named Casa De Cat in Shah Alam to house rescued stray cats.
According to the Selangor Royal Office’s Facebook page, the sanctuary has five resident kittens at the moment.
Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin is also known for carrying cat and
dog food in her car to feed stray animals.
In January this year, she urged Malaysians to be kind to street animals.
“I appeal to all Malaysians to have compassion and love for these unwanted strays who are not capable of defending themselves,” she said in a statement.
Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, who is the royal patron of SPCA Selangor’s Stray Free Campaign, was born on June 4, 1971.
She worked as a flight attendant before becoming a newscaster and anchor with Radio Televisyen Malaysia.
During her tenure as a newscaster, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin won the Seri Angkasa Award’s Best
TV News Presenter title in 2001 and 2005.
Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin were married on Aug 31, 2016, at Istana Alam Shah in Klang.
She was appointed as the Tengku Permaisuri Selangor by Sultan Sharafuddin the following month.
Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin has a daughter and a son from a previous marriage.
In 2017, Universiti Putra Malaysia named a newly discovered species of orchid Vanilla Norashikiniana after the stylish and elegant Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.
