Helping to make important decisions

- By WANI MUTHIAH wani@thestar.com.my

THERE IS an inner circle within the Selangor palace which state Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah confers with when making decisions on various issues.

Established in 1959, the Selangor Council of the Royal Court functions as an advisory body to the state’s Ruler.

In addition to the Sultan, the council has 22 other members who are categorised into four groups.

The council’s members are made up of the Sultan, the Raja Muda, the Sultan’s brothers, other royal family members, state representatives as well as elders within the state and its districts.

The reigning Sultan is the chairman of the council followed by ex-officio members made up of the

Raja Muda, the Tengku Bendahara Selangor, the Tengku Laksamana Selangor, the Mentri Besar, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) chairman and the state Mufti.

This is followed by a group known as Ahli Waris Yang Lain (The Other Heirs), who are royal family members in line to the Selangor throne.

The third group comprises five district chieftains called the “orang besar”.

The subsequent group of seven members is known as the “orangorang tua” or elders comprising men who are well respected within the community.

The requirement for this position is that the person appointed must be a male Shafii Muslim who is not less than 35 years of age, is able to read and write in Bahasa Malaysia and is of good and exemplary conduct.
