Colourful fruits every day

-

DID you know that adding salt to pineapple makes it sweeter? And that durians are so stinky they are not allowed in hotels?

Fruit gives us vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients which keep our bodies strong. We should eat fruits every day and it is best to eat a variety of fruits in a variety of colours – green (kiwi, apples and grapes), orange (oranges, mango and papaya) and yellow or red (strawberries and bananas).

It’s the durian season now. Any durians lovers here? Have you been eating durian? Have you tried the popular varieties of durian like Musang King, D24 and Red Prawns?

Recently, Starchild asked readers to send in their letters on the topic, Favourite Fruits. Here’s what they have to say.

Zara Elizabeth Rimbu Samson, 11, enjoys fruits like watermelon, strawberries and mango. “Fruits are good for health because they contain many nutrients and vitamins.”

Eight-year-old Saira Abigail Terence likes strawberries because they are juicy and sweet. “Strawberries can be handpicked fresh from the farm. I like them because of their unique shape.”

Jane Ng Ai Wen, seven, “Fruits are beautiful, delicious and good for me. I like strawberries, watermelon and grapes the most. During the conditional movement control order, we must take care of our health by taking enough fruits.”

“My favourite fruits are watermelons, apples, grapes and also oranges. You can make fruits into a salad by mixing them with mayonnaise. Fruits can be added into jelly to create a nice dessert too. You can blend mangoes with milk, and ice cream to make a milkshake,” says Sara Lim Xin Ann, eight.

“I love apples and watermelon. Watermelon quenches my thirst. An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” says Flora Sia, 10.

“Popular tropical fruits are durian, mangosteen and cempedak. Fruits have different types of vitamins which help with children’s growth and health,” writes Kenesha Anne

Isitor ,12.

Younger sibling Ethan Jude Isitor ,11, says: “I enjoy eating fruits because they help boost my immune system.”

“My favourite fruits are strawberries, grapes and kiwi fruit,” Kaira Anne Isitor, five.
