Doing the best with what I have

- By IAN KOK

The story of Tanjiro Kamado from the renowned anime, Demon Slayer resonates with me. It is one of the best animes I’ve ever watched – the pain, the struggles and surely, the continual persistence and victory of the main character Tanjiro are highlighted.

There are many lessons that can be learned from this amazing character. Not only is Tanjiro a loving son and older brother in his family, but as someone who comes from a poor background and with nearly all his family members slaughtered, he picks himself up and moves on despite the great adversity he faces.

he then trains under his master, with all his heart and soul, to become one of the best demon slayers around! Training, whether it is in the show or in real life, is never easy.

Later, he goes on to fight a super strong opponent and his only weapon, an exclusive black Katana (sword), is snapped and rendered nearly completely useless. Yet, despite the impossibility of him winning the fight, he still persists and does his utmost best.

I can relate to Tanjiro. Truth is, the end of last year and this year have been tough for me, especially on my job hunt.

Last year, procrastination was the “demon” I was fighting against, and lost to. This year, however, as things were beginning to pick up, an even stronger “demon” appeared – the Covid-19 pandemic – just as my job hunt was gathering momentum, with interviews and job offers coming. Suddenly, everything came to a halt and I felt defeated yet again.

however, during the MCO, my eyes were opened. A great paradigm shift took place in my heart, and at the end of March, I chose to dust myself off, get up, and start running the Good Race again.

I’ve been blessed not only with amazing mentors, but also an amazing family and a support system of friends I couldn’t even dream of.

I may not have all that I need but, like Tanjiro, I have enough. You can be sure I’ll make the best of what I have!
