A new partnership gateway
INTERNATIONAL Medical University (IMU) in partnership with University of Dundee (UoD) is offering excellent programmes related to drug discovery, a multidisciplinary field with lots of opportunities.
The collaboration involves IMU’s BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme, which started in 2008 and has been accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK since 2014 and The School of Life Sciences in UoD.
Students who have completed the one-year IMU Foundation in Science and one-year BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme are offered these options:
> Two years at UoD to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree
> The 2 + 1 (3) years route at UoD to obtain an integrated master’s degree
> Two years at UoD to obtain a BSc degree followed by one year to obtain a MSc degree
The teaching philosophy at IMU is similar to UoD, so students can adjust quickly to the UoD learning environment.
UoD staff frequently visit IMU to conduct interactive sessions with students, so they get to know some UoD staff before travelling to Dundee.
Also, there will be lots of online sessions for IMU students to interact with their future colleagues and faculty members at UoD.
About University of Dundee
In the most recent UK-wide assessment of research quality in UK higher education institutions (Research Excellence Framework 2014), UoD was ranked No.1 in the UK in Biological Sciences.
In teaching for this subject, UoD ranked third in the UK behind Oxford and Cambridge (The Sunday Times/Times Good University Guide 2020). The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) Leiden Ranking 2019 for Biomedical and Health Sciences Impact places UoD first in the UK and Europe, fifth in the world.
“The State of Innovation”, a recent report by Clarivate
Analytics, ranked UoD as the most influential scientific research institution in the world for pharmaceuticals for the period 2006-16.
UoD offers amazing student support – the Dundee University Students’ Association is dubbed the best student union in Scotland. Moreover, the University of Dundee Malaysian Society provides support to Malaysian students.
The cost of living is also fair – Dundee is 14% more affordable than the average UK city.
Kit-Kay Mak, an alumna of Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and a lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, received the prestigious Welcome Trust fellowship as well as training at the Wellcome Centre for AntiInfectives Research and Drug Discovery Unit, an integral part of the School of Life Sciences at UoD.
Mak says, “I believe students in this articulation programme will enjoy life at Dundee while becoming competent graduates.”
The pharmaceutical chemistry degree from IMU is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. The course is undertaken entirely at IMU and completed in three years (six semesters). Upon completion, graduates can enter the workforce as chemists in pharmaceutical and other chemical industries.
After obtaining the IMU BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry degree, those who meet the academic criteria can pursue the Master of Pharmacy programme at the University of Sydney or Curtin University in Australia and are given credit exemptions. Master of Pharmacy graduates from these universities can register as practising pharmacists in Australia and Singapore, but not in Malaysia currently.
Commencement of this programme is in July and September each year. If you are interested, apply online at www.imu.edu.my
If you have just completed SPM and do not have pre-university qualifications, the one-year IMU Foundation in Science offers a direct route to any of the university’s degree programmes.
