Everything a medical college should be

-

MEDICINE and dentistry remain popular career choices for young Malaysian secondary school-leavers today. While a career choice is often easy to make as it is driven by the student’s inert passion and drive, the same cannot be said for choosing the ideal tertiary institution.

Proven track record

With over three dozen medical schools in Malaysia to choose from, Melaka-Manipal Medical College is miles ahead as a top medical school.

Since its inception, more than 4,000 medical and over 200 dental surgeons have been delivered to the Malaysian and overseas international health systems, with many of its alumni members progressing successfully onto specialist careers of their choosing.

Future-ready skills

Melaka-Manipal focuses on delivering a knowledge-plus programme that is benchmarked against the World Health Organization’s recommended curriculum.

Building on this foundation, MelakaManipal also provides its students with opportunities to have a true taste of working life by presenting its MBBS final semester students with a simulated semester based on the housemanship structure. As such, students graduating with this experience are better positioned to do well during their housemanship years.

For Melaka-Manipal’s dental students, the opportunity to perfect their clinical skills in Melaka-Manipal’s very own on-campus dental clinic allows them to build mastery on procedures in all dentistry disciplines.

With a student-dental chair ratio of almost 1:1, coupled with a patient pool of over 30,000 per year, students have many opportunities to develop their dental skills under the watchful eyes of experienced lecturers.

Clear pathway

For fresh SPM school-leavers, a pathway programme is provided via the Foundation in Science. A uniquely designed 12-month programme, students are prepared to excel in MBBS or BDS as subjects are specifically chosen to deepen a student’s existing science knowledge so that they have a solid head start in their later years of undergraduate studies.

Exposure to pre-clinical subjects of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry ensures that students are ready for their journey ahead as a #FutureDoctor and #FutureDentist. Students in the foundation programme who meet entry requirements are given assured progression into the MBBS or BDS programmes.

Lifelong learning support

In a future where technology dictates though, those skills that are distinctly human will be among the most valuable, and it is these skills that are enriched through postgraduate study. Considering how vital this is, Melaka-Manipal organises workshops for USMLE, PLAB and various Royal College fellowship exams at its campus in Melaka, so its students can prepare for them prior to graduation with minimal travel involved from their ongoing routine.

Students are also exposed to various aspects of the profession outside of the clinical setting to ensure that all career options within the field are opened to them.

Balanced lifestyle

Since its inception, MMMC has successfully integrated the Manipal ethos into its Malaysian curriculum, faculty and students.

Students can join clubs for music and fine arts, enjoy literary pursuits, meditation, yoga, debating, photography and language classes. The campus also has playgrounds and courts for cricket, hockey, football, tennis, basketball, badminton and volleyball, as well as swimming pools, gyms and an athletics track.
