- By PAN EU JOE paneujoe@thestar.com.my

PLANNING your next trip to the land Down Under? South Australia should be the place on your list.

If you’re travelling by car from the state of Victoria into South Australia, the first South Australian region you will arrive at is the Limestone Coast.

Home to some of the most spectacular natural wonders, the Limestone Coast is one of the top regions to visit in South Australia.

Here’s a four-day travel itinerary around the Limestone Coast to get you going.

1. Blue Lake

After crossing the Victoria-south Australia border, make your first stop at Blue Lake, Mount Gambier.

Once you get there, the breathtaking scenery of the cobalt-blue lake, sat on a volcanic crater, will have you staring at it for hours. However, the lake does change its colour to steel-grey seasonally, so be sure to check for the best visiting period.

With four lookout platforms available nearby, be sure to visit each of them to capture different yet magnificent photos worthy of social media posting.

Can’t get enough of nature’s beauty? Take a walk on the man-made trail around the entire lake or go for a quick run for travellers who are looking to stay fit during their holiday.

2. Umpherston Sink Hole

Located nearby is the Umpherston Sink Hole, another one of South Australia’s natural wonders.

As one of the most spectacular gardens located in the regional city of Mount Gambier, the Umpherston Sink Hole was once a typical limestone cave, formed due to the corrosion of limestone rocks by seawater waves. When the chamber’s roof collapsed in 1886, the sinkhole was naturally created to what it has become today.

Surrounded by lush greenery and home to a local colony of possums, this sunken garden oasis includes viewing platforms, benches, sculptures and walking paths.

3. Tantanoola Caves

From the sink hole, take a short 24-minute drive to one of the most-visited destinations in South Australia. Known for its scenic beauty, the Tantanoola Caves consist of a chamber that’s 30m wide with an overall height of 8m.

Boasting an extraordinary display of cave decorations, it can be explored at leisure and is wheelchair accessible too.

Before exploring the caves on your own, an experienced guide will lead you inside, providing insightful information and ever ready to answer any of your questions.

4. Mayura Station

After that, head north-west to Mayura Station, not only to fill your tummy, but also be delighted with an award-winning culinary experience.

First established in 1845, this restaurant has been making headlines as a boutique beef producer specialising in full-blood wagyu beef.

Presenting three full-blood wagyu beef labels – Gold Label, Platinum Label and Signature Series, you will get to choose a set menu featuring a choice of three- or fourcourse dining options.

The chef then prepares the menu utilising the best cuts of Mayura full-blood wagyu beef, available fresh on the day.

Bookings are essential at this high-quality wagyu beef steak house.

5. Bellwether Wines

Need a place to stay for the night? Try glamping at Bellwether Wines.

Similar to but better than camping, it includes amenities like electricity, Wifi and even hot water bathrooms.

During summer, you can choose to have a barbecue for dinner or if you want a quick and easy meal, cook at the camp kitchen which includes a kettle and toaster.

As for families with young ones, you can play with your kids in the tree house, at the swing and garden or meet friendly animals like cows, sheep, donkey and chickens.

Based at the 1868 Glen Roy Shearing Shed in the Coonawarra wine region, Bellwether Wines also offers wine tasting sessions, and visitors are invited to witness and get involved in the wine making process!

6. Long Beach

Ready for some fun in the sun? Long Beach at Robe is the perfect place, especially for families.

With a wide sweeping beach like Long Beach, Robe is one of the most popular holiday coastal towns on the Limestone Coast.

Besides the usual beach activities, you can also drive on the sand which is accessible to all vehicles. Just be sure to stick to the firm sand at low tide and drive carefully.

7. Larry the Lobster

Before leaving the Limestone Coast, you should make a quick stop to meet and take plenty of selfies with Larry the Lobster, who’s the biggest local around, literally!

Standing at 17m tall and regarded as one of Australia’s most impressive big things, the big lobster is a popular tourist attraction located in the town of Kingston SE, South Australia.

While you’re there, feast on a value-for-money meal or have a coffee break at the café before continuing to your next destination.
