Rexkl’s free online series
IT might take some months before REXKL, known for its music events, exhibitions and arts markets, gets back to hosting major live events.
For now, the Chinatown arts space (formerly Rex Cinema), is offering an online series called REXKL Sessions.
The series streams every Thursday (until Aug 27) on Airasia Redtix, with a mixed programme.
The first batch of REXKL Sessions
features local singer-songwriters, bands and comedians, including Otam, Kavin Jay & Papi Zak, Wanted Symphony, Nadhira, Helloluqman, SHN, Darren Teh,
Prakash Daniel, Resort and Monoriff.
Brian Kwan, Rexkl’s programming manager says this community initiative is to help generate income for beleagured creatives.
Each participating artist in the series is paid a fee by REXKL.
“It’s important we show our support to them in getting us through this difficult time,” says Kwan.
Viewers can help support them via the Airasia Redtix platform, with a minimum donation of RM10.
These REXKL Sessions were recorded at REXKL in May.
With theatres and live event venues reopening on July 1, Kwan says a limited audience might also be allowed to attend future recordings of REXKL Sessions at the end of this month.
Kwan is hoping to add variety to the sessions as the weeks go along.
Mini theatre shows, visual art and photography workshops and dance performances are being planned for the new REXKL Sessions.
“Nothing else is scheduled yet at REXKL. Our collaborators are also cautious to restart. We are monitoring the public’s movement and sentiment in light of the reopening of cinemas and live event spaces,” says Kwan.
REXKL is in talks with Kelab Seni Filem Malaysia to restart its weekly Wednesday film screenings.
