Collaboration for clean energy

-

PROTON and Pekat Group Bhd, through their respective subsidiaries, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote the adoption of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology within the national car maker’s business ecosystem.

The MoU was inked between Proton’s Proton Global Services Sdn Bhd and Pekat Group’s Solaroo Systems.

Under the collaboration, Solaroo will install rooftop PV panels at 50 sites of Proton’s staff and vendors’ premises that would provide an output of 1.5MW-peak in two years.

The MoU also continues Pekat’s successful launch of a 12MWp grid-connected solar PV system at Proton’s manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak, enabling a reduction in carbon footprint and energy costs since March this year.

Appearing for Proton were Proton Edar chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah, Proton Global Service (PGS) chief executive officer Lee Yeet Chuan, while Solaroo was represented by director Johann Sze and Pekat by its chief executive officer Chin Soo Mau.

Roslan said the move would help Proton improve its ESG (Environmental Social and Governance) score and provide an ethical and sustainable impact of its business.

“With energy costs still elevated, coupled with the continuous push among carbon conscious stakeholders towards sustainability, the partnership between PGS and Solaroo marks the beginning of the next phase in Proton’s journey towards a more holistic green energy adoption,” he said.

Roslan also said the adoption of more clean energy measures throughout Proton’s ecosystem was in line with the government’s target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Lee said the investment into the PV system would range from RM5mil to RM12mil as costs would depend on the size of the sites to be installed.

Meanwhile, Johann said the collaboration with Proton would improve Solaroo’s standing in providing PV services in the commercial and industrial segment.

“With the inevitable electricity tariff hike, the usage of renewable energy is appreciable in today’s economy,” he said.
