Dutch connection

-

FROM Amsterdam to Melaka, the long-distance Dutch link is being revived through classical music.

This Sunday, the Melaka Classics live music series will be hosting the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam at Christ Church (Jalan Gereja) in the heart of the historic state’s Dutch Square.

This concert A Season For Celebration by the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam is part of its whirlwind Malaysian visit, where it also participated in classical programmes and played at the Rondofest gala night in George Town, Penang recently.

In Melaka, the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam will be presenting a set spanning works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Malaysian composer Ooi Wei Chern.

Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No. 3 and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 5 are among the selections, alongside Ooi’s Memories Of Childhood, a newly composed piece specially commissioned by the Rondo Production.

This Amsterdam-based string quartet has been around since 2009, and features Judith van Driel, Marie-louise de Jong, David Faber and Marleen Wester.

Its recordings include Haydn’s String Quartets, Op. 20, Volume 1, Nos. 2, 3 and 5, and String Quartets Op. 20, Volume 2, while it saluted Brahms’ The String Quartets, String Quintet No. 2 (with viola player Lilli Maijala last year.

“The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam wants to show that music affects people; that music can lead us to profundity and connection especially when it provokes friction. The true meaning of music reveals itself in a shared experience in which you, as a listener, play a vital role,” outlines a description about the group.

The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam’s concert at Christ Church in Melaka starts 5pm tomorrow. Tickets: RM35 (standard), RM28 (students).
