How to keep your moustache shipshape

-

CHEVRON, handlebar or Walrus? There are at least 30 different types of styles for the hair under your nose.

And since moustaches have been making a comeback for some time now, here are some tips on how to keep them in shape – which requires a steady hand.

getting the contour and volume right is key, says german barber Dirk Schlobach.

Whether you favour a more subtle Pencil moustache or a classic Chevron a la Tom Selleck, you’ll need a combination of scissors and razor to perfect it.

“You also shave the shape of the moustache and therefore you have to work very accurately,” says Schlobach, adding that you should focus on achieving symmetry on both sides.

It’s easiest to start by trimming only a little bit to still have some wiggle room later, according to Schlobach.

When wet shaving around the moustache, always shave in the direction of growth to avoid skin irritation.

You should also use a fresh blade so that the hairs are not simply plucked out.

A moustache requires regular care, Schlobach knows.

That means washing it daily, with a special beard shampoo if you can, as they have a higher

moisturising content than normal shampoo and will help to keep your moustache smooth, the expert says.

As beard hairs tend to be drier than the hair on your head and become brittle more quickly, beard oil can also be a good idea as it makes the hair softer.

You should also groom your moustache every day with a thin comb which helps to retain the form.

Any skin flakes under the beard can be removed with a brush. If you want twirled ends, you can choose between beard polish, beard pomade or a wax. – dpa
