FUJIFILM SHAPES FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH THE POWER OF INNOVATION

-

SINCE its humble beginnings in 1991 as a photographic film-centric enterprise, Fujifilm Malaysia has been constantly reinventing itself through diversifying its business segments to keep up with changing times.

To date, the core management philosophy of the Fujifilm Group is the essence of solving social challenges through its four business segments – healthcare, materials, business innovation and imaging.

Fujifilm Malaysia managing director Kensuke Aragane says this constant growth and the evolution of Fujifilm is to become a company that resolves social challenges through its diverse business segments.

“Fujifilm has successfully reinvented itself from a traditional photographic film manufacturer and is committed to achieving sustained corporate growth and continuing to innovate and grow in sync with technological advancements for enhancing the quality of life of people,” he said.

As Fujifilm Group went through the motions and survived the global financial crisis, natural disasters and even the more recent Covid-19 pandemic, the company not only adapted to changes quickly but emerged stronger.

This reflected its achievement of significant increases in both revenue and operating income in the fiscal year ended March 2022 (FY2021) that hit Jpy2,525.8bil (about Us$20.7bil) and Jpy229.7bil (about Us$1.9bil).

Healthcare

Fujifilm’s healthcare segment has two sections – “medical systems” that mainly consists of medical devices for diagnostic purposes and “life sciences” that covers areas like the biologics contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) and life science solutions for supporting drug discovery, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.*

The extensive line-up of medical devices and systems provided includes X-ray diagnostic systems such as mammography, CT/MRI, ultrasound devices, endoscopy, in-vitro diagnostic system, IT systems and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) that manages and stores diagnostic images.

This is done by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its healthcare products whereby it helps healthcare professionals facilitate screening without having to move the patient from their bed.

Currently, Fujifilm Group is focused on the development of AI technology powered diagnostic imaging to create even higher value-added solutions and further expand the medical systems business.

Fujifilm has been providing products and services that utilise the AI technology in more than 80 countries worldwide and the Group recently acquired Fujifilm Healthcare (formerly Hitachi’s diagnostic imaging-related business) on March 31, 2021 – offering a one-stop total solution that caters to the needs in the medical facilities.

By combining extensive product line-up with image processing and AI technologies, Fujifilm provides new value-added solutions centred on medical IT systems.

Healthcare has become the largest segment for Fujifilm Group in terms of revenue and operating income in FY2021 and has a targeted sale of Jpy1tril (about Us$7.9bil) by FY2026.

Materials

The focus is on recording media and graphic communications businesses.

Through the recording media section, Fujifilm provides magnetic tapes to major data centres and research organisations for many years as they not only offer benefits including large storage capacity, low cost and long-term storage performance, but also create air gap data protection physically isolated from the network, thereby minimising the risk of data damage or loss caused by cyberattacks.

The graphic communications section provides a range of printing materials from dry toner digital press models in full colour or monochrome to inkjet printing systems and CTP plates.

Fujifilm also offers workflow systems – software solutions that help provide print production management solutions.

By having a wide range of portfolio from analogue to digital printing, Fujifilm provides one-stop solution to various customer needs in the commercial printing field where digitisation is progressing.

Business innovation

Run by Fujifilm Business Innovation, formerly known as Fuji Xerox, this segment provides workplace solutions including digital colour multifunction devices and printers, workflow solutions and document services such as system integration and cloud services.

Combining Fujifilm’s expertise in analogue printing and inkjet printing, Fujifilm Business Innovation offers a one-stop solution with a much broader portfolio to accelerate printing businesses’ growth.

One of the main goals through this segment is to help customers grow their businesses and resolve business-related challenges in various aspects by optimising overall work processes and strengthening customer relationships.

In addition, in the photo industry, they work closely to provide Fujifilm Business Innovation’s multifunction printers that are fine-tuned to suit the needs of photo printing.

Imaging

As a leading company in photography, Fujifilm handles everything from input through output, providing colour films, instant cameras, colour paper, developing printing systems and even photo printing services.

Since developing the world’s first fully-digital camera in 1988, Fujifilm has been pioneering the advancement of digital imaging. From its instax series of instant cameras to the X series and GFX series of mirrorless digital cameras, Fujifilm has captured many photographers’ hearts with its products.

Future forward

These business segments are testament that Fujifilm never stopped growing or diversifying its business structure to meet the ever-changing social needs.

Looking ahead, Fujifilm has set a target to achieve over Jpy3.5tril (about Us$27.7bil) in revenue by FY2030 and to have a 50% reduction in carbon emissions across its entire product lifecycle.

Being strong on sustainability, Fujifilm strives to fully operate on carbon-free energy and plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions by FY2040.

Fujifilm has mapped out its future plan to accelerate its efforts to resolve social challenges by utilising diverse technologies both in the photographic film business as well as new technologies such as AI and initiating more collaborations between other organisations that share the same passions and ambitions as Fujifilm.

Anchored by an open, fair and clear corporate culture complete with leading-edge proprietary technologies, Fujifilm is more determined than ever to remain a leading company by boldly taking up the challenge of developing new products and creating new value.
