HOW do you make sustainable living a normal part of your lifestyle and daily activities?

That’s what Zero Waste Malaysia (ZWM), a non-profit organisation and community group that advocates sustainable living and development, aims to encourage among Malaysians.

Established in 2016, ZWM wants to normalise zero-waste living through two flagship events – ZWM’S 3rd Zero Waste Festival named Under the Stars (Oct 1), followed by the return of the 30-Day Zero Waste Challenge (Oct 1-30).

The Under the Stars Zero Waste Festival, to be held tomorrow from 2pm-9pm at Taylor’s Lakeside Campus in Subang Jaya, Selangor, will include a lakeside picnic with over 30 vendors (food, crafts and other products), workshops and a lively open mic night. All the events and activities will proceed without generating new waste.

During the festival, no single-use disposables will be utilised, a move towards creating a greener Malaysia. Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers to purchase things.

The goal of the festival is to show Malaysians that we can live a sustainable lifestyle and to address the misconceptions of it being difficult, expensive and time-consuming.

The open mic night is open to all musicians, artistes and performers. It will include a light projection experience as well as a special guest appearance by Zee Avi.

Mission 30: Zero Waste Challenge

It takes time to develop good habits and, when it comes to sustainable living practices, it’s no different.

The 3rd Zero Waste Festival will also kick off ZWM’S latest edition of the 30-Day Zero Waste Challenge happening throughout the month of October.

Mission 30: Zero Waste Challenge will allow Malaysians to see what it’s like living with low waste for an entire month.

“We are extremely excited to finally have our 3rd Zero Waste Festival. We believe this gathering is the perfect chance for Malaysians to reset their mindsets after a long period of heavy and unavoidable waste-generation during the pandemic.

“The follow-up challenge will also give everyone a platform to experience and practise living sustainably with plenty of support from our team,” said ZWM director, Khor Sue Yee.

This is ZWM’S second time running the challenge, which aims to create lasting sustainable habits. This year’s challenge is based on a Mission 30 theme, calling participants “agents” who are on a mission to battle climate change and protect our world, with the aim of incorporating gamification and excitement to the environmental challenge.

Attractive prizes await winners.
