Octogenarian companions

- By LINDA LIM

AMONG the vibrant members of my golden girls club, a remarkable group of 18, stand six octogenarians, each embodying the essence of vitality and zest for life. Ranging from 82 to 89 years old, these ladies defy age with their spirited pursuits and unwavering camaraderie.

Leading the pack is a sprightly 89-year-old, who, despite some hearing impairment, remains active in her daily routine.

Accompanied by a friend who rents a room in her house, they share culinary adventures, preparing dinners and venturing into town for lunch. A former golf enthusiast and line dancing instructor, she now finds solace in Korean movies, her infectious smile masking any hint of discomfort from ageing ailments.

Joining her are three avid golfers, the eldest among them at 87, who, twice weekly, navigates the golf course with youthful determination. Though the game now consists of a brisk six holes, their spirits remain high, fuelled by laughter and post-game gatherings over steaming cups of tea and local delicacies. Despite age-related challenges, their dedication to the sport and each other is unwavering, setting an inspiring example for us all.

Another octogenarian, at 83, astonishes with her agility, earning praise from her physician during annual check-ups. Clad in coordinated golf attire, she epitomises elegance on the greens, a testament to her past accolades as a club captain and competition winner. Even as she reflects on bygone triumphs, her resilience shines through, undiminished by the passage of time.

Not to be overlooked are the remaining trio, each contributing their unique talents and experiences to our circle. From organising golf outings to crafting exquisite handbags, their indomitable spirits infuse every gathering with warmth and laughter.

Despite life’s inevitable setbacks, they remain active participants in their communities, their wisdom and grace guiding us all.

In the twilight of their lives, my octogenarian companions embrace independence with fervour, their resilience a beacon of inspiration to us all. With little time for lamentation, they navigate each day with grace and gratitude, reminding us to seize the present moment with joy.

As we, the younger members, strive to emulate their vitality and zest, we offer heartfelt applause to these remarkable women who continue to illuminate our lives. Kudos to my octogenarian buddies!
