Trading event of the year enters final round

-

THE final round of Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd’s (Kenanga IB) KenTrade Trading Challenge III has officially kicked off, attracting participants from all walks of life.

The Grand Challenge, as the final round is called, ends on Sept 29 and will see 10 finalists trading with real cash of RM100,000 per participant - for the first time ever.

Goh Kok Yeo, a 33-year old mechanic from Johor, says the cash would provide him with the opportunity to try out his investment strategies and improve his trading skills.

“Despite being a simulated game, it is exactly the same as the real thing!”

Goh, who admits that he’s proud of making it to the finals, reveals that he “made many mistakes” when he started investing in the stock market many years back.

“Things changed after I started learning risk management and both fundamentals and technical analyses from online resources such as Youtube and e-books.”

Sim Yu Xin, a 21-year old student from Selangor, points out that trading virtually has its benefits.

“The emotional factor of losing money does not come to play when trading with virtual money. Emotions may be the ultimate reason why people lose or make money in the stock market.

“Live trading tests the individual’s true ability to manage real money and many factors such as emotions, greed, fear and liquidity may affect trading decisions.”

Sim says the KenTrade Trading Challenge III offers participants a great, unique experience - especially when it’s real cash.

“My key takeaway experience would be managing RM100,000 real cash and trying to make as much money as possible in a single month. That is a great experience at my age. Once a trader, always a trader!”

Teng Le Woi, a 47 year-old programmer from Selangor, says it’s imperative to have a long-term plan when trading in stocks.

“Always have a long-term investment objective with a fundamentally strong company.”

Meanwhile, Yeoh Shue Keat, a 39-year old businessman from Perak and avid stock trader, advises potential investors to abstain from speculating.

“Don’t speculate and do invest. Focus on a stable company that has continuous earning trends and gives dividends. Buy shares when it drops , sell when it’s up. Please invest in some counter and not all in the same counter.”

Caryn Choo, a 28-year old accounts assistant from Penang, says she is grateful for Kenanga IB’s trading challenge, as it has helped her hone her stock-trading skills.

“I feel great for being one of the top 10 finalists. I would like to thank Kenanga for providing me with this great opportunity to trade with cash in the real market.

“I focused on penny stocks which allows me to buy more shares in volume with a limited start up capital of one million.”

All participants under the KenTrade Trading Challenge III each received RM1mil in virtual money to trade with. Split into two stages, the initial or Virtual Trading Challenge stage ran from July 31 to Aug 25.

Weekly winners received RM800 as first prize, RM500 as second prize and RM300 as third prize. In addition, overall winners received RM5,000 as first prize, RM3,000 as second prize and RM2,000 as third prize.

The top 10 qualify as finalists for the second stage - namely, the Grand Challenge.

The Grand Challenge takes place from Sept 4 to 29, where finalists trade shares with real cash by relying on live market feeds from Bursa Malaysia.

The Grand Challenge Winner is the one with the highest positive portfolio and will not only walk away with up to 50% of the gains made from the Grand Challenge trading, but also RM50,000 in cash and round trip for two to Hokkaido.

The winners will be determined by their portfolio value and the amount of cash (realised profits) they have in their accounts. The challenge is open to participants aged over 18 years old.

The KenTrade Trading Challenge III is supported by Bursa Malaysia, AirAsia X, Atlan Holdings Bhd, Zon Duty Free and Duty Free International Limited. For more information, please go to www.KenTrade.com.my or call toll free 1800-88-2274.
