BATU KAWAN: Ikea plans to introduce online shopping for its Malaysian customers next year.

Ikea South-East Asia managing director Christian Rojkjaer said the online experience would be available for Singaporeans in two weeks.

“After Singapore, we plan to launch the e-commerce portal for Malaysia next year,” he told the media after a groundbreaking ceremony of a new Ikea store here which were attended by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Sweden ambassador Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt. Also present were Aspen (Group) Holdings Ltd president and chief executive officer Datuk M. Murly and Ikea Batu Kawan store manager Pathmalingam Arumugam.

“We expect the store to receive six million visitors a year, just like Ikea Damansara. The store puts Ikea within an hour drive for 825,000 households in Penang. It has the potential to tap into the market of 6.2 million people within a two-hour drive,” he added.

Rojkjaer said the RM600mil Ikea store, with 39,979 sq m of retail space in Aspen Vision City, would be ready in the first quarter of 2019.

“People could also look forward to ideas and products that would help them to enjoy a more sustainable lifestyle at home while sav- ing money. The range includes products such as LED bulbs, efficient taps, food savers, recycling bins, and home gardening solutions,” he added. Besides offering affordable products the new store will also have a playground for children and the Ikea food experience.
