Perodua says January market share hit 40%

-

PETALING JAYA: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) claims that its monthly market share in January reached a record high of 40% after it sold 17,693 vehicles, compared with the total industry volume of 43,930 vehicles.

In that month, Perodua sold 9,029 Myvis, 4,085 Axias, 2,776 Bezzas and 1,803 Alzas and said that those vehicles led the sales chart for the segments they were in.

“While we defer to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA)’s numbers, we are cautiously optimistic that for January 2018, our monthly market share is the highest ever in our history.

“This was spurred by deliveries of the new Myvi, as well as continued strong demand for our other models,” said Perodua President and chief executive officer Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh ( pic) at the company’s Chinese New Year Luncheon with the media and busi- ness partners yesterday.

He said the new Myvi has racked up over 48,000 bookings to date and the company delivered its 18,000th unit yesterday. The company has sold more than a million Myvis in Malaysia since 2005.

“This performance has been a great boost to the Malaysian automotive ecosystem as the better-than-expected demand for our latest offering as well as our current model line-up have resulted in better demand for local parts,” added Aminar.

He said Perodua was looking to purchase more than RM5bil in components and parts this year from mainly local vendors. All Perodua models have over 90% local content.

To cope with the large number of bookings, Perodua is ramping up production to meet demand.

He said the Perodua plant would work overtime until demand stabilises.
