SunCon plans to re-enter Indian market

-

PETALING JAYA: Sunway Construction Group Bhd (SunCon) plans to re-enter the Indian market this year to bid for rail and other potential jobs, said managing director Chung Soo Kiong.

Having exited the country in 2012, he said the construction company had built highways before in India and was now looking at rail works.

SunCon previously built seven highways in India including the East Coast Corridor roadworks in Rajasthan and Cochin Port Connectivity in Vallapadam, Kerala, he told a press conference after the group's annual general meeting here.

However, Chung did not elaborate as the plan was still premature.

Besides India, SunCon was also interested to enter ASEAN countries such as Myanmar.

On another matter, Chung said the company was looking forward to participate in the second phase of the Klang Valley Double Track (KVDT) project.

“We are definitely interested and happy to participate,” he said.

Previously, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the KVDT project would be reviewed as the original cost, estimated at RM5.9bil for 110 kilometres, was deemed too high.

He also said the group was optimistic of the outlook for the remaining year despite changes in the government.

“SunCon is not reliant on government contracts much and that is why we are expanding overseas as well,” he said. — Bernama
