High achievers ready for more

-

SEGI’S high achievers Yap Pau Cheng and Ng Xe Yiing, both 20, from the Subang Jaya campus are ready to take on the world after graduating from the A-levels pre-university programme with flying colours. Having scored straight A’s in their results, the world became their oyster. They now have the option to apply to any top university.

Last month, Yap received many offers from universities such as Warwick, Bristol, Imperial, but she chose to accept the offer from the prestigious Oxford University.

Yap will be enrolling in the mathematics and statistics course at Oxford University, and she is currently preparing herself for the course by taking extra tuition classes on Further Mathematics.

She decided to take up the extra tuition classes so that she wouldn’t be behind her peers when she starts at Oxford.

Ng is still in the midst of the application process, and she is looking into enrolling into one of Australia’s top universities.

The students not only excel academically, but are also very active in their respective Buddhist Societies and youth groups.

Ng, in particular, enjoys organising and running events by the society. When asked how they managed to maintain great grades and still be active socially, they said it was all about time management.

“The motivation is there. I have a very competitive mindset, as I don’t want to lag behind my peers. I also want to get my A’s so that I can apply for scholarships to the best universities in the world,” said Ng.

They also mentioned that the lecturers played a very important role in guiding them towards their goal. They were very thankful to have lecturers who can give them focused attention, as well as pushing them to their limits.

“Studying is not just reading a book - the lecturers can tell you what you have to do, but you need your own preparation, as well as finding a method that works best for you,” said Yap.

To help lighten the financial load, she is applying for a full scholarship from Oxford University and the JPA scholarship; currently she is waiting for confirmation.

Ng is also hoping to receive a full scholarship from the Australian universities.

One of the secrets to their success is the mentor approach enlisted in the programme. Experienced lecturers give students guidance in focus study groups as well as individual counselling.

The pastoral care offered gives them greater confidence and a smoother transition from a school to tertiary level study environment.

The Cambridge A-levels course is approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and is recognised by established universities in UK. The Cambridge A-levels Science stream teaches Thinking Skills and compulsory LAN subjects stipulated by the Ministry of Education apart from the core subjects.

The A-levels is an 18-month programme, which enables students to take up other tertiary studies at SEGI and any higher education institutions, as it is globally recognised and accepted.

Apart from that, SEGI Education Group offers the Foundation in Science, Foundation in Arts and Foundation in Information Technology.

These one-year programmes arm SPM holders with very strong basics in key subjects required from further studies at tertiary level.

Apart from the core subjects for each stream, students at SEGI are also taught Thinking Skills and compulsory MQA subjects, as stipulated by the Ministry of Education.

Students who have completed the Foundation or A-levels programme with suitable grades are able to continue with further studies at SEGI or other higher education institutions.

SEGI Education Group provides industry driven programmes from a variety of foundation and Diploma level to Bachelor degree programmes; American Degree Program as well as a variety of postgraduate programmes, including the Doctor of Business Administration.
