Students triumph

-

IT is a part of Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) education and training commitment to help young talents go further by extending and improving education support.

In this regard, the MICPA launched the Students Sponsorship Programme (SSP) in 2011, an effort supported by the Approved Training Employers, the accounting firms as well as approved training organisations (ATOS).

MICPA currently collaborates with various accredited public and private universities in Malaysia to identify suitable candidates who are interested in pursuing the Advanced Stage Examination (ASE) of the MICPA programme, in the final year of an accredited four year Bachelor of Accountancy degree programme.

Students may be sponsored by approved accounting firms or training organisations for two modules of the ASE, the Taxation as well as the Financial Accounting and Reporting modules.

In return, the students will be required to work for the approved accounting firms or approved training organisations during their six-month internship as well as upon completion of their Bachelor of Accountancy degree programme for a period of not less than three years.

The arrangement provides an avenue for young talents to nurture and grow in terms of employment opportunities and gaining the relevant practical training experience.

The SSP is an educational experience that will help graduates build a solid foundation of technical knowledge, skills, ethical and professional values to complement today’s business world.

Graduates will be imbued with the relevant value-add qualities to stay relevant and adapt to changes which may occur in their professional careers.

Furthermore, it adds to their competitive advantage in the employment market.

The Institute recently released the Term 3 (2011) results for Financial Accounting & Reporting (FIN311) and the pioneer batch of students under the MICPASSP scored an impressive pass rate of 84.2%.

Even more remarkable is that all seven students under the MICPA-SSP from University of Malaya (UM) passed the FIN module - four of the students are with Pricewaterhousecoopers and three with BDO Malaysia.

MICPA president who is Pricewaterhousecoopers executive chairman, Datuk Seri Johan Raslan said:

“We sponsor the MICPASSP because we believe both in the quality of the MICPA programme and in rewarding excellence. Our first batch of interns did well.”

UM vice chancellor Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon said:

“UM strives to produce excellent and well-rounded graduates who can meet the needs of the job markets.

“We also aim to achieve high percentage of graduate employability.

“In order to achieve these targets, we believe in smart partnerships and close collaborations with industry partners such as the MICPA-SSP programme.

According to BDO Malaysia managing partner, Datuk Gan Ah Tee, managing partner of BDO Malaysia:

“BDO is a strong proponent for providing our local undergraduates with early opportunities to train as world class professionals.

“As the first Approved Training Employer on board the MICPA-SSP, our confidence in the programme coupled with effective support to students in their work and studies, including practical sharing sessions by partners has indeed paid off.”
