Evolution continues at Multimedia University

MULTIMEDIA University’s Faculty of Information Technology in Cyberjaya is no more. The faculty, which had been in existence since MMU emerged on the Cyberjaya landscape, has been renamed the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI).

The name Faculty of Computing and Informatics was chosen as it better reflects the faculty’s twopronged vision of providing academic programmes that encompass key computing disciplines (computer science, information systems, information technology and software engineering) as well as interdisciplinary majors in computing.

In terms of undergraduate academic offerings, FCI will be offering only one degree, the Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours). However, students will be able to choose from three fields of specialisation, namely Software Engineering, Information Systems and Game Development. All these courses will be three-year programmes.

The change is in the faculty’s name only, as its commitment to produce innovative graduates was never compromised. FCI dean Dr Ho Chin Kuan stresses that the faculty will continue to produce highly skilled graduates not just through the classroom, but also through extra-curricular activities such as the Microsoft Imagine Cup; egenting Programming Competition and the Cisco Skills Challenge, just to name a few.

Students and researchers will continue to have access to the faculty’s two centres of excellence - The Centre for Visual Computing (which is a University Centre of Excellence), and The Centre for Multimodal Knowledge Processing. Student that want to create new knowledge in these cutting-edge fields would find a superb collection of resources to begin their journey with.

MMU’S method of nurturing its students by targeting high employability explains why MMU’S tracer studies have consistently revealed that over 90% of its graduates secure employment within six months of completing their studies.

In recognition of MMU’S efforts, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, in its 2009 Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning (SETARA) placed MMU in the Excellent (Tier-5) rank. This firmly cements MMU’S position among the top universities in Malaysia.

Students and members of the public are invited to attend MMU’S Open Day on March 31 for Cyberjaya campus and April 8 for the Malacca campus.
