Chance to study medicine abroad

-

MANY young men and women tend to ask themselves, ‘Why should I become a doctor?’ For some people, it is the prestige of being an expert consultant on a patient’s health. To others, it is purely the sense of reward and achievement of saving lives, whether in an emergency room, research laboratory or physician’s clinic.

Nowadays, more and more students are looking at foreign shores for their education options. Medic Ed Consultant Sdn Bhd founder and managing director Dr Lau H.M will be sharing some thoughts on what he believes to be benefits of studying medicine overseas. According to Dr Lau, the first benefit of studying overseas is the low cost. He also disagrees with the views that lower tuition fees offered by certain universities abroad meant that their medical degree equates to a lower quality medical degree compared to those that charge higher-cost tuition fees. Dr Lau said, ‘What you call a hand in Malaysia is also a hand in Russia.”

It is true that the quality and amount of practical experience is the only difference between medical courses that a medical student will undergo during the course. Dr Lau commented that theoretical knowledge must be put into practice to be of any use to a patient, as he believes that practical experience in medical studies is of utmost importance.

There’s a saying that getting one’s hands dirty, sometimes literally, is the best way to learn and is immeasurably vital to future medical work.

Besides, due to the easy access to local government hospitals, Russian and Indonesian government universities are able to provide huge opportunities for practical experience. Teaching time is properly balanced with work in the field.

In that regard, they are on the same level with Malaysian government universities which also place an equivalent amount of emphasis of balance on classroom-practical. In spite of being an agent for overseas medical schools, Dr Lau also mentioned Malaysian government universities are very good as their access to teaching and governmental hospitals prepare the students well for their working life.

Many people choose to study overseas because they would like to experience the life of living in a foreign land.

A person’s horizons can be broadened by the experience of a different culture, language, and lifestyle as well as building and strengthening a person’s character as one have to adjust to the moving out of one’s comfort zone. Living overseas enables the student to have another point of reference; therefore the student is forced to re-evaluate the way he or she has been getting things done all the while. This not only applies to study methods but also to the way of ordering food in a restaurant and also to the way of interacting with patients and support staff. If things are done with the right attitude, there is no such thing as a bad experience, as every experience is a learning opportunity.
