Kata exponents steer Penang to the overall title
PETALING JAYA: Penang rode on the strength of their kata (non-sparring) exponents to secure their third consecutive overall title in the national junior, cadet and Under-21 karate championships in Miri last weekend.
World junior championships bronze medallist Lim Chee Wei led the Penang team to seven of the eight gold medals contested in the kata competition.
Penang missed out on a clean sweep when Elaine Cheah was stopped in the semi-finals of the girls’ cadet (14-15) category, which was eventually won by Sabah’s Vallenda Agustine.
Penang amassed a total of 9-6-6 to finish as overall champions ahead of Hayashi Ha (8-413) and Goshin Ryu (4-0-5).
