HBO
(Astro Ch 411, 7.30pm) The Majestic – The problem with Jim Carrey (pic) is that he has been too entrenched as a funny guy; I mean, think Ace
Ventura or The Mask. So even as he appears in a serious film as Peter Appleton, a Hollywood screenwriter who receives a summons to testify before the feared House Un-american Activities Committee, we can’t help but expect him to break out in his trademark antics. But not in this show... his character accidentally crashes his car, develops amnesia and ends up in a small town. Appleton’s remarkable resemblance to a missing World War II hero, Luke Trimble, causes the residents, including Trimble’s girlfriend, to rejoice at his “homecoming”. The soldier’s father (Martin Landau, pic) happily welcomes his “son” and together, they refurbish the town’s decaying movie theatre, The Majestic. Appleton regains his memory when a film that he wrote plays at The Majestic and is forced to choose between the life he left behind and the new one he’s grown to love.
