SEPANG: Needing duit raya for the upcoming festive season, a deliveryman staged a robbery with his two friends and made off with RM40,000 worth of cigarettes from his company.

Now, they face jail time after Sepang police found holes in their story.

The 23-year-old suspect was transporting eight crates of cigarettes with a partner to a restaurant in Taman Meranti Jaya at about 11.30pm on July 1 when he meticulously staged his own robbery.

His partner got off the truck and took the keys with him into the restaurant to deal with the owner on the order for cigarettes.

The suspect then came into the premises and asked his partner for the keys, claiming that the truck was blocking a car that was trying to get out of a parking spot.

“The partner returned to find the suspect lying on the ground and the truck with the 400 cartons of cigarettes gone.

“He claimed that two men attacked him with parang. They also took his smartphones, wallet and RM1,200,” said Sepang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Aziz Ali.

The case appeared to be a simple robbery but as investigators they found holes in the story.

“For one, there were no vehicles in the area at the time and his explanation was sketchy. We detained him and he later confessed to being in on the whole thing,” he said.

“The men were planning to sell the cigarettes to make some money to spend for Hari Raya,” said ACP Abdul Aziz.

He said the suspects were charged with gang robbery and vehicle theft at the Sepang magistrate’s court yesterday. They were released on bail with no plea recorded.
