Terengganu’s Azreen in race to be youngest track queen
SIXTEEN-year-old Azreen Nabila Alias wants to be the youngest track queen at Sukma.
The Terengganu athlete is confident she can win the blue riband event after her fine performance in the National Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Athletics championships in Kuala Terengganu in May.
The Form Four student from the Terengganu Sports School clocked a personal best of 12.02 seconds to break the girls’ Under-18 MSSM meet record.
The previous MSSM record of 12.07 was set by Chiew Hui Lian of Johor in 2010.
Azreen’s time is also the fastest clocked by a junior athlete in competitions this year.
“It’s been a great boost to have clocked the fastest time of 12.02 at the junior level this year.
“Now, I want to create Sukma history by becoming the youngest woman to win the 100m gold medal,” said Azreen, who also won the 200m gold in the MSSM meet in 25.51.
Azreen, however, expects stiff challenge from Perak’s Noor Eewan Syafiqah Mohd Sabri, who clocked a personal best of 12.09 to win the silver medal in the last Sukma in Kangar in 2014.
Azreen does not fancy her chances in the 200m, though.
“I don’t think I stand a chance as Noor Eewan will be favourite (in the 200m) based on the time she did in competition this year,” said Azreen.
Noor Eewan clocked a personal best of 24.50 in the 200m to bag bronze in the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, last month.
The athletics competition will be held at the State Stadium from Tuesday.
